Organ Trio Magic - Jonathan Smith Trio

Organ Trio Magic

I have recently realized that a long held dream has been realized: to play in an organ trio. This one kind of snuck up on me, and hit me: Hey I do play in an organ trio - it’s my trio!

(There is something about the sound of Hammond B3, electric jazz guitar, and drums that elevates the music to a mystical plane).

Since 2011 I have had the amazing good fortune to play on a regular basis with keyboardist Marcus Reynolds and drummer Jon Huteson. These guys are incredible musicians and I feel privileged to hang with them. Even better, I’m glad to call them my close friends.

Over time I have learned a ton about jazz, dynamics, time, and the art of improvised interaction from playing in this trio. We’ve almost never had the luxury of a rehearsal, so most of our repertoire and relationship has developed on the bandstand. As my musicianship develops, our group sound solidifies and obtains new heights. It is a journey. It’s magical.

The Jonathan Smith Trio plays mix of funk, boogaloo, standards and soul jazz. If you haven’t had a chance to check us out, please do when you can. Upcoming dates are posted on the web site calendar at: jonathansmithjazz.com
